Every December the color coronations roll in – Pantone first, then every paint brand in the group chat – and every year the same question goes unanswered: cute, but can I wear it? Here are five lists back to 2000, judged against your season's actual palette. Which picks are genuinely yours, which work as an accent away from your face, and which stay on the mood board where they belong. A score would just be a vibe with decimals, so you get a verdict and the reason instead.

Swatches are approximate on-screen renderings – several of the original colors sit outside what a screen can show at all. Selections by Pantone (running since 2000), Dulux/AkzoNobel (since 2004; listed here from the named era), Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Behr, each the source of its own list; siOsi is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them. The verdicts are our own editorial reading, measured against the same twelve season palettes used across these guides.

How the verdicts work

Each pick is measured against the sixteen swatches of your season's palette – the same palettes rendered on every guide here. Close enough and it's yours. A bit further and it's an accent: bags, shoes, trousers, anything that isn't framing your face. Past that, we say so, and we name the axis that pushed it out – too warm, too cool, too muted, too bright, too light or too deep.

Two things we deliberately don't do. No match percentages, because the honest number underneath is a color-space distance and dressing it up as "73%" implies precision nobody has. And no special treatment for whatever the current year's color is – the question worth answering isn't "can you wear this year's pick", it's which of the whole list belongs on you.

The distribution is honestly uneven, and it gossips about the brands. Pantone skews bright, clear and blue-leaning – the springs and winters collect its picks by the handful, while Deep Autumn has never once been chosen in 27 years. The paint brands lean the other way: earthy, muted, wall-friendly, which is where the deep and soft seasons finally get theirs. Walls get to be Deep Autumn. Pantone, apparently, does not.

Questions people actually ask

How do you decide whether a color "is mine"?
We measure the distance between each Color of the Year and the sixteen swatches of your season's palette in CIELAB color space – the same palettes our guides render. Close enough sits in your palette; further out works as an accent away from the face; past that we say not yours, and name the axis that pushed it out: temperature, depth or how muted it is.
Why is there no percentage or match score?
Because the underlying figure is a distance in color space, and a percentage would invite reading 71% versus 74% as meaningful when it isn't. You get three honest buckets and one honest number – how many of the picks are yours – because a count is not a score.
Why do the whites and greys get judged differently?
Off-whites and greys sit near every palette by raw distance, which would make them everyone's color and tell you nothing. So for near-neutrals we judge on the two things that actually vary: how light they are, and which way they lean. That lean is measurable – the 2026 pick reads warm and creamy rather than truly neutral, whatever the announcement says.
What if almost none of them are mine?
Then that's your result, and it's a real one. Pantone's picks skew bright and clear, so the deep, muted seasons match very few – Deep Autumn has never matched a single Pantone pick. Try the paint brands' lists, which run earthier and quieter, or just trust your own palette: it has sixteen colors that beat every entry here, and the whole point of knowing your season is that you stop needing a trend list to pick well.
Why do the paint-brand lists start in different years?
Because the programmes did. Pantone's runs from 2000, Sherwin-Williams counts its own lineage from 2011, Benjamin Moore's continuously documented run starts in 2014, and Behr called its 2018 pick their first ever. Dulux actually began in 2004, but the early picks were never given marketing names, so we list the named era from 2013. Where a year had no verifiable official name, we leave it out rather than guess.
Where do the decade palettes come from?
They're our own editorial read – no official Color of the Year existed before 2000, and the only pre-2000 resolution anyone publishes is the decade. We picked the six shades that genuinely defined each one, from 1950s pastel kitchens to 1990s hunter green, and ran them through the same measurement as everything else. The picks are arguable; the verdicts aren't.
